Bathynomus giganteus more commonly referred to as the Giant Isopod can be found in the deep cold waters of the Atlantic ocean. First discovered by French Zoologist Alphonse Milne-Edwards in 1879 after fishing a juvenile male B. giganteus from the Gulf of Mexico. Giant Isopods are an example of Gigantism. Compared to their common relatives that grow to a mere 1 – 5 cm, the giant relative can grow a length of 19 – 37 cm and weigh from 2 – 3 pounds and upwards.

When I first learned what this azoic creature of the deep was I was watching The Blue Planet series from The BBC. These creatures can be found in large numbers, but not limited to, hot sea vents of the deep oceans of the Atlantic and Pacific although temperature is extremely cold near these vents temperatures can reach upwards of 800 degrees Fahrenheit. With a temperature of this extreme one would think they would already be cooked and served with drawn butter! But unfortunately not Due to the pressure from that deep they have spent millions of years and are adapted quite well to it. It is only once their pressure is changed and they are brought to shallow waters that they then can be boiled like a lobster essentially hence why I would like to eat one of these bad boys one day!

In brief, I am amazed by this creatures ability to not be known more to the world along with millions of other species I hope this blog will open the readers eyes to.

Cheers!
